Flavonoids
Flavonoids occur widely in the plant kingdom and are the source of colors of flowers, leaves, stalks, etc. From ancient times, flavonoids have been utilized as natural colors and as active constituents of galenicals / crude drugs and herbal medicines. The catechins are the chief ingredient of green tea, and they also are classified as a flavonoid.
Many flavonoids have a hydroxyl group in their structure and are called "polyphenols". Recently, polyphenols are in the spotlight for their various anti-oxidative properties and their ability to lower blood cholesterol levels.
